What we assess
Most of these overlap. Back pain, leg pain and a stiff neck can each come from more than one structure, and the examination exists to separate them rather than to confirm whatever you arrived thinking it was.
Overlapping patterns
Almost everyone arrives describing one of three things: an ache in the back, pain running into a limb, or a neck that will not turn. Each of those has several possible sources behind it, and which one it turns out to be changes what actually helps.
Timing and position do most of the sorting, long before anything is touched. Pain that eases once you are moving behaves differently from pain that only arrives after standing for a while, and pain stopping above the knee is a different question entirely from pain reaching the foot.
So the pages below are organised by what people actually describe rather than by diagnosis, because a symptom is what you arrive with. Where testing points away from us you get told that, which is covered under red flag symptoms, referrals and safety.
The route
Where it sits, what aggravates it, how long it has run. You do not need to name the condition to be seen.
Movement compared side to side, the tissues that reproduce it, and nerve testing where anything travels.
What the testing showed, in words, including anything that points somewhere other than here.
Something to start, work for the days between, and the visit at which this gets measured again.
Conditions
Each page covers what the presentation usually turns out to be, what imitates it, and what changes the answer.
Disc, joint or muscle, separated by testing rather than assumed.
Learn moreRotation compared side to side against the shoulder line.
Learn moreWhere the pain stops on the leg narrows it faster than intensity.
Learn moreOnset location separates neck headaches from migraine.
Learn moreReasoned from symptoms and testing rather than from a picture.
Learn moreWhere the numbness sits identifies the level reliably.
Learn moreHow long you hold a position matters more than which one.
Learn moreReassessed each trimester, because the load keeps changing.
Learn moreReturn decided by tests you pass, not by the calendar.
Learn moreSymptoms often appear a day or two after the impact.
Learn moreHip, knee and ankle tested together because they share load.
Learn moreCommon questions
What people ask before booking, when they are not yet sure the problem is the sort we handle.
Came in sure I knew which problem I had and left with a different and better explained answer.
They separated what was coming from the joint and what was coming from the nerve before touching anything.
Two of my symptoms turned out to be unrelated to each other, which no one had suggested before.
Good at explaining the difference between the possibilities. I did have to wait a week for the slot.

First Visit
The initial exam is not a formality. It is the measurement that every treatment decision traces back to. Here is what to expect, step by step.

Whiplash
A collision on the Gardiner Expressway or Don Valley Parkway can leave your neck injured for weeks. Learn what Ontario insurance covers, how recovery is measured, and why documentation matters.

Headaches
Hours at a desk or in traffic tighten the neck and trigger headaches. A clinic measures what is tight, treats it, and measures again.

Where it sits, what makes it worse, and roughly how long. That is enough to arrange an appointment, and the examination does the sorting.
General information, not medical advice. What applies to you is decided at the examination.
